Afghan Citizens Call for Resumption of Refugee Resettlement Program by Germany
A group of Afghan citizens who have applied for asylum in Germany have urged the German government to resume the refugee resettlement program.
These individuals, including human rights defenders, journalists, prosecutors, transgender individuals, and employees of the former Afghan government, have warned that their lives are at serious risk under the Taliban regime in Afghanistan.
The Afghan citizens also stated that their only hope is the resettlement program in Germany and called for the German government to fulfill its promises regarding the acceptance of refugees and the resumption of this program for those facing severe threats.
These requests come at a time when Friedrich Merz, a German politician who is set to become the country’s next chancellor, recently announced that the refugee acceptance program, including for Afghan migrants, will be halted after the formation of the new government.
In a meeting with potential coalition partners, Merz emphasized the implementation of strict measures for illegal immigration and the return of refugees without legal documents.
In response to this decision, Afghan citizens have urged the German government not to halt the resettlement program for those at risk and to honor its commitments in this regard.
