Schools of Panjshir: Between Education and War

Following the publication of an IntelMedium report regarding the transfer of military equipment by the Taliban’s special brigade from Dashtak in Rokha district to mountainous hideouts, multiple sources have informed IntelMedium that the Taliban have begun relocating ammunition and military equipment into buildings of several schools in the Rokha area of Panjshir. This has raised serious concerns among local residents.

IntelMedium spoke with at least ten residents of the Rokha area for this report.

According to these sources, ammunition is being stored in school buildings in parts of Dashtak-e-Hessa Awal. Local residents say the equipment has been moved into schools to prevent it from being damaged in the event of possible clashes or a potential attack by Pakistan.

However, residents stress that using educational facilities for storing weapons and military equipment effectively turns schools into military sites and puts the safety of civilians at risk.

Residents of Rokha emphasize that schools must remain safe environments for children’s education and that their use for military purposes is unjustifiable.

They have called on the Taliban to immediately remove all ammunition from educational buildings.

The use of schools for military purposes in Panjshir has been reported previously. On 27 March 2022 (7 Hamal 1401), local sources reported that the Taliban had converted several schools in the province into military bases.

According to reports, the schools of Abdera, Chamol-Warda, Paranda, Hesarak, and Abdullah Khil High School were among the facilities used for the deployment of Taliban forces, preventing students from attending classes.

Observers say past experiences have shown that the military use of educational centers can turn them into potential targets during conflicts, posing serious risks to civilians—especially children.
